I felt like I was dying. My brain pounded against my skull, demanding for some sort of escape from my withering body. My stomach felt empty and full at the same time. My skin wanted to crawl away and I felt like at any point it would. When I opened my eyes, my vision blurred and the world around me spun. I hissed against the lights, dragging the blankets over my head and clamping my eyes closed. The need to puke overcame me, yet my body didn’t move from its place in bed.

I groaned and pulled the blankets away from my face. My cheeks burned, my hair stuck to my forehead. I felt as if I had been grounded through a trash compactor. What happened last night?

I remembered meeting Rachel, the translator from Artemis, and then we drank all that black stuff. From there everything became hazy. I remembered laughing a lot, there was a bush, something warm enveloping me… I tried to recall how I got home, but everything in my head was dark. I looked down at myself, the gown I wore the previous night still on with the skirts bunched up around my hips.

I forced myself out of the covers, covering my eyes with a hand and lifting my body from the bed. I groaned at the movement, the need to be horizontal now tempting me back into the bed, but the need for the bathroom overcame it. Why did I drink so much?

I stood, the cold stone floor sending a chill through my feet. I pulled at my dress, trying to get it over my shoulders, but got my arms stuck first before being able to fully take it off. I made my way into the bathroom but felt too weak to fill the tub up with water. All I wanted to do was sink my sweaty, disgusting body into the water and now I couldn’t even do that.

I stopped myself from groaning, knowing I was being a child. I walked toward the sink and splashed cold water on my face, enjoying the feeling of it against my heated skin. My stomach heaved, but nothing came of it.

I heard the door in the bedroom open, so I grabbed a robe from the cabinet and wrapped it around me. When I left the bathroom I expected to find Zoe tidying the bed. Instead, Vorian stood with a tray of steaming liquid, along with an arrangement of green and purple pastries. He looked clean, wearing a crisp button down black shirt with black pants. He set the tea cups on the table. There weren’t any dark circles under his eyes, hinting he slept well. Wish I could say the same…

I watched him as I leaned against the door to the bathroom, enjoying the way the light spilled in and highlighted the contours of his cheeks. There was a small lift in his lips, a light in his eyes. He turned toward me, as if feeling my gaze on his shoulders.
